Emla (lidocaine and prilocaine) is a type of local anaesthetic, which is a numbing medication. This form of medication is normally used as a method of pain relief whilst you are preparing for a basic medical procedure or operation. The way in which it works is that the active ingredients lidocaine and prilocaine work together to block the nerve signals in your body, which are associated with pain. Emla may be used to numb the skin or the surfaces of the genital regions to lessen the pain from the surgeon or doctor inserting medical instrument.
